In today’s complicated, risky world, personal security personnel and close protection bodyguards have extended well beyond traditional and statutory bodies such as the police to become a highly-trained, specialized industry of substance.

Also known as a close protection officer or executive protection agent, a bodyguard is a specialized type of security guard who does his or her best to ensure the personal security of political figures, celebrities, business executives, or other individuals who may be at risk of personal attacks.Bodyguards may work singly or in coordinated groups – security details – to achieve safety goals. They are expected to be weapons-efficient, according to the environment in which they are working, to be proficient in hand-to-hand combat, to be vigilant and accustomed to noticing the out-of-the-ordinary and the suspicious in their surroundings at all times. In addition, they can be advanced-driver- trained, know first aid skills and be able to negotiate in high-risk situations.

Bodyguards will research the backgrounds of both clients as well as key associates and suspected or known threats, will plan lowest-risk travel routes, pre-search rooms, buildings and vehicles or other modes of transport, provide IED(Intelligent Electronic Device) detection and counter-sniper monitoring and, routinely or on an ad hoc basis, carry out security checks.

Threats that bodyguards will protect their clients from include kidnapping, assassination, harassment, theft, assault, loss of confidential information, threats, and other criminal offences and, in the case of escorting celebrities stalked by photographers and fans, will focus on maintaining a safe distance, blocking the path of anyone becoming too aggressive towards their client. Some specialize in protecting the children of VIP’s from kidnapping and/or assassination.

Bodyguards are trained to react efficiently and effectively and at speed in emergency situations and to be able to make grave decisions on the fly. They keep strangers at a safe distance and will know the best way to exit a location in event of a problem.

Close protection courses should be accredited with the appropriate statutory and industry watchdog and regulatory/standards-maintenance bodies. Training candidates may come from local government, municipalities, corporate, private, the cash-in-transit sector or executive security teams.

Bodyguards and close protection officers are trained in organisation of a close protection team, embus and debus drills (getting into or out of vehicles), the law and power of arrest, physical training, personal protocol and etiquette, defensive and tactical driving and collision avoidance and skid control, CPR and emergency first aid, residential security, transit protection, static protection, pedestrian protection, firearms handling / live fire, security advance parties and threat assessments.

We trust that you have been given some food for thought and have a better idea of the questions you need to ask us, or our bodyguarding division, should the need arise.
